Before buying: Read the material label, inspect the surface, seams, lining and fastenings, and try the garment with your usual layers. Ask for a specialist assessment before relying on a repair estimate. Do not use fire, scratching, water or chemicals to test someone else’s garment.
This is a checklist for assessing a particular piece, not a claim that all new or second-hand garments have the same condition. It does not describe a second-hand buying service at Kaftan Angelo.
Inspection checklist
| Area | What to check | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Material label | Read the composition and care instructions | Can the seller confirm the material and any repairs? |
| Surface | Look for cracking, peeling, discolouration and worn areas in ordinary light | Is the finish original or has it been treated? |
| Seams | Inspect joins and stressed areas without pulling them apart | Are loose threads or tears assessed for repair? |
| Zips and closures | Open and close gently; do not force a stuck fastening | What repair, if any, has been proposed? |
| Lining and pockets | Look for tears and damaged pocket bags | Can a specialist assess any hidden damage? |
| Fit | Fasten over your intended layers, sit and reach forward | Is any adjustment feasible for this garment? |
Material identification has limits
Touch, smell and a photograph do not conclusively establish a material. Read the label and request clarification if the description is unclear. Do not cut a seam or damage the surface to inspect it. See how to tell real leather for further checks.
Condition and repair decisions
Ask about storage and cleaning history. If there is a persistent odour, staining or surface damage, ask an appropriate specialist what can be assessed or treated before buying. Do not assume cleaning will remove a problem or that repair will cost a fixed amount. Obtain an individual quotation; no repair prices are published here.
A lower purchase price does not establish the final cost of ownership, and a new garment is not automatically a guarantee of fit or future condition. Inspect the actual piece in either case.
Fit comes before a stretching assumption
Do not buy a tight jacket on the assumption it will stretch to fit. Check shoulder movement, lining tension, sleeve length and the fastened hem with your intended layers. Read our fit guide for preparation.
