Start with the garment: Compare leather, shearling and fur using the layers, movement and coverage you need. The material name alone does not establish a temperature rating, waterproofing or comfort guarantee.

Leather: check cut and finish
Two leather jackets can differ in thickness, lining and feel. Fasten the jacket over your usual top and check shoulders, sleeve length and movement. Do not buy a tight garment assuming it will stretch into a comfortable fit. A biker-style jacket is not automatically certified protective equipment.

Shearling: leave room for the intended layers
Inspect the material label rather than identifying a garment from a photograph alone. Check its inner surface, neck coverage and closures. Try sitting and reaching forward with your intended winter layer. Warmth depends on the garment, wind, activity and what you wear underneath; no universal temperature range applies to every piece.
See shearling styles and the selection guide.
Fur: compare coats, jackets and vests separately
A vest and a full coat provide different coverage. Ask the store to confirm the material of the specific garment, including any trim, and examine its lining and closures. Compare weight and freedom of movement in person instead of assuming softness or lightness from a category name.

Care follows the individual label
Do not apply one treatment to all three categories. Follow the garment label and ask the store or an appropriate cleaning specialist about the specific finish. Do not apply creams, waxes or sprays without confirming suitability. Keep garments away from direct heat while following their drying instructions.
